Als „non-competitive film festival“ hat sich das Filmfest Oldenburg seit seiner Entstehung im Jahr 1994 bei Publikum und Branche als ein erfolgreiches Festival etabliert, das sehr profiliert Anspruch und Attraktion, große Premieren und innovative Entdeckungen verbindet.

Filme wie Takeshi Kitanos „Kids Return“, Steven Soderberghs „Out of Sight“, „Spider“ von David Cronenberg, „Ken Park“ von Larry Clark, „The Fountain“ von Darren Aronofsky, „The Astronaut Farmer“ von Michael Polish, „Puffball“ von Nicolas Roeg und „Tyson“ von James Toback oder große Erfolge der Independent Szene wie „Northfolk“ von Michael Polish, „Aristocrats“ von Paul Provenza, „Four Eyed Monsters“ von Susan Buice und Arin Crumley, „The Guatemalan Handshake“ von Todd Rohal, „Sisters“ von Douglas Buck, „Fix“ von Tao Ruspoli oder „Choke“ von Clark Gregg haben seitdem ihre Deutschlandpremieren in Oldenburg gefeiert.
